Tuesday Assembly: Local officials share important wisdom

By DAN HALEY (#0560) and CHAD HALEY (#0375)

At SUNY Morrisville, after physical training and county elections, the delegates once again gathered in the Rec Hall to listen to two guest speakers. Joseph Griffo, a New York State senator, spoke to the value of civic engagement; and Todd Carville, a candidate for District Attorney in Oneida County, shared the importance of integrity.

On Tuesday morning, both speakers delivered enthused addresses that energized the crowd. Each shared valuable lessons pertaining to the purpose of Boys State: understanding and participating in government, an appropriate message for New York’s primary day.

Between Griffo’s call to action and Carville’s emotionally appealing speech on integrity, this year’s delegates should be well prepared as they move into some of the more hotly contested elections on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Griffo’s speech focused on a few main points. The first pointwas to stay informed. What this means is to educate yourself about what is going on and different views of politics and government.

The next one was to be interested. From educating yourself, you could find interest in the topic. After that, you are more likely to want to call attention too, or figure out problems.

The last point was to be involved. After you have discovered interest, you should get involved and work to make a change. The point of this speech is to allow delegates to see that in a modern day world, there are many aspects that are needed to make a decision. He brought up a lot of current day issues and explained his thinking and views about how to solve them.

He used his point to go through the best and most efficient way to fix them. An example is that the New York Government took away funding from Boys State after he had helped raise much support for it. He stated how he and his people think it is very wrong and they are planning to change it.

Todd Carville shared that great speeches can be boiled down to one word, one lesson, and one story. For his speech on Tuesday, Carville’s word was integrity, furthering the lesson to “do the right things for the right reason.” The story he shared was one of a time in which he put his reputation on the line in court, knowing it was the right thing to do, and it ended up being the most just decision he could’ve made. He ended his speech reminding the boys not to take opportunities for granted, and never to pass them up when they come your way.
