New York State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt came to Morrisville this Boys’ State to give an empowering speech to all the citizens on the first night.
Assemblyman Schmitt spoke about how in his first twelve hours of Boys’ State he wanted to go home. He was assigned to be a road guard, and he had to wear a bright orange safety vest, which he despised. He was convinced that by the third day he would be going back home.
Through a lucky series of events Assemblyman Schmitt became the mayor of his county, and his enthusiasm grew as the week went on. By the end, he was selected to be one of the interviewees for Boys Nation and was nominated. At Boys Nation he got to meet President George Bush. Assemblyman Schmitt emphasized the value that the Boys’ State program has to provide. He told the citizens how through life, in college, or in job interviews, these Boys’ State citizens will meet each other again.
Assemblyman Schmitt served as the 99th district representative from 2019 to 2022. Ever since he was young, Assemblyman Schmitt was involved in politics and public service. As a high schooler, he worked for New York Assemblywoman Ann Rabbitt. After getting a BA from Catholic University, he worked as a staffer for State Senator Greg Ball. As an Assemblyman, Schmitt made monumental progress for New York, he passed nine prime-sponsored pieces of legislation and over 75 sponsored and cosponsored bills. He passed more bills than normal for a minority party member. His legislature emphasized tax relief, public safety, reform of ethics, and the preservation of natural resources. He secured millions of dollars of funding through direct grants for schools, the police, local governments, libraries, and fire departments.
He proudly secured funds for his community’s veterans’ organizations. Moreover, Assemblyman Schmitt worked towards PTSD initiatives and anti-substance abuse initiatives.
