Opinion: Bringing balance to Boys’ State | Subik

Many students fail to get the most out of Boys’ State until it’s too late — and here’s why.

Boys’ State represents a rare opportunity for high school students to participate within an efficient self-established democratic government — an educational experience of a lifetime. It is also a chance to enjoy oneself through spirited social engagement with newly formed friends. Most citizens struggle to embrace both sides of the week-long program.

This tension becomes most apparent in the election process at Boys’ State, in which all of the soon-to-be seniors are expected to conduct a civilized voting routine — nominating and selecting candidates for positions, at least at the state level, such as governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state comptroller, party chairman, and party clerk.

When holding such elections, aspiring officeholders campaign on varying platforms; some more convincing than others. There are often two categories of candidates. Option A: showmen who are able to rally the crowd with their charisma and unorthodox gimmicks; or Option B: experienced political minds with adept yet obfuscated arguments .

Profile #1; those who draw applause from loud speeches, lofty promises, and inventive stage antics represent the Boys’ Staters who prioritize entertainment — usually forgetting the citizenship and leadership aspect that the organization aims to instill.

Candidates fitting profile #2 find themselves absorbed in crafting lengthy, meticulous contentions explaining why they are the best choice for their respective positions. This type of contender represents the attendees who obsess over attaining the highest political offices; yet their fixation on the academic nature of the process and taking themselves too seriously may isolate themselves from forming genuine relationships and worthwhile memories.

Both groups, through their individual blind spots, are missing out on what makes the five-day ordeal truly lasting. Instead of being a closed-minded heckler who speaks before thinking, or a self-righteous perfectionist who passes up on enjoying the moment, citizens should strive to adopt the strengths of each profile during their stay.

The ideal Boys’ Stater is courteous while listening and confident when taking action; values companionship whilst maintaining a growth-oriented mindset scholastically. Those who are able to respect every moment equally — challenging or amusing — leave Morrisville with not only a collection of memories but also as an esteemed member of society.
