What’s there to do at Boys’ State?

No, Boys’ State is not just just marching and sitting (although those are certainly the majority). Boys’ State may be an event to make leaders, and good citizens, but that does not mean that there isn’t time to find something you enjoy.

First and foremost, you may want to consider running for a political office, whether it be at the city, county, or even state level. City and County elections are very straight forward; Get the city/county together and decide who gets what. This will most likely involve a speech, so be prepared. At the state level, the nationalist (yellow buttons, odd numbers) and federalist (blue buttons, even numbers) parties split and enter separate halls for a more professional, serious voting process to begin. Each county will send their nominee to the stage for the respective position, for a total of 10 nominees. They are then given time to speak, and each county votes for who they want. One person must win the majority to win the position, so multiple rounds could ensue. Even if you are afraid of speaking, it is recommended that you at least try for a position. It might give you a better idea of what to strive for. Who knows?

If you’re deathly afraid of speaking, and/or simply don’t have an interest in being elected, no worries! Boys’ State has plenty to offer. You may consider joining a sport, which includes a couple of options for athletes.

  • Softball
  • Soccer
  • Cross Country (There is a 5k on the final day)
  • Basketball

Athletes leave to report to their respective sport shortly after caucus at 4:00pm. They compete in tournaments against rival cities, for a chance to be #1. If you do decide to play a sport at Boys’ State, be sure to remember to bring equipment for the sport!

If you opt not to play a sport, 4:00pm will end up being a free time for you. You may want to shower, write a letter, or go do work for a club. Speaking of which…

Boys’ State has a variety of activities/clubs you can participate in if you are selected.

  • Newspaper
  • Website
  • Video
  • Band
  • and more!

These activities require work, so come prepared if you want to join. They may end up taking some of your free time, but the results are worth it!

In conclusion, Boys’ State has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re an athlete, a politician, a trumpet prodigy… You’ll have fun here at Boys’ State!
