35 years later, Chuck Osterhoudt bids farewell to Boys’ State

After 35 years of serving the New York Boys’ State program and helping shape multiple generations of young men, 2026 is Chuck Osterhoudt’s last year with the American Legion’s Boys’ State program.

When Osterhoudt was first asked to be a counselor by the department commander, he wasn’t sure what to expect, but he was willing to give it a shot. Ever since that first year he has come back time and time again without hesitation.

Choosing one memorable moment was difficult for him, but one standout moment was the passing of a fellow counselor during Boys’ State. The impact of that loss has stayed with him ever since. It is clear that to Osterhoudt, Boys’ State isn’t just a program, it’s a community and family where bonds are formed that last a lifetime.

Over the years, Osterhoudt has observed several changes in Boys’ State. He notes the effect technology has had on the program, such as adding cell phones.

“The boys were closer with the counselors and each other back then (before phones were allowed at the program),” he noted.

Despite this change, Osterhoudt remains passionate about Boys’ State and has continued coming back. “I come back for you boys. … I enjoy doing it,” he said.

Now retired and living in Tennessee, where he moved following his daughters, he’s looking forward to spending more time with his daughters and going on family trips. Even though he is leaving Boys’ State, he hopes the program continues improving and merging ideas from other programs he has visited.

It is clear that Osterhoudt has left a lasting impact on everyone involved with Boys’ State over the past 35 years, and Boys’ State won’t be the same without him, but it will always be better because of the mark he left during his time here.

Thank you Mr. Osterhoudt for your incredible and unmeasurable commitment to the Boys’ State program!
