Everyday one citizen will be chosen at random and interviewed to be the citizen of the day! Today’s citizen is Matthew Downey, A.K.A. “Pants”.  Pants is in the city of Miller, in the county of Scheiberling. Soon after he arrived, he was granted the very unique nickname of “Pants”, and the Marines, as well as the other staff even call him that. Pants also ran for the Nationalist Governor, but unfortunately didn’t win. However, Pants did win county executive.

Where are you from and what school do you attend?

“I live in West Babylon and I go to West Babylon High School.”

Why did you want to come to Boys’ State?

“I came to boys state to improve my standings as a person, to learn about who I was and what I stand for, and what I really want to do with my life.”

Is there anything you hope to gain from Boys’ State?

“I hope to gain a better understanding of myself and my surroundings and especially the people that I have around me. I want to see how my actions effect others and how other people see me and just how others see the world.”

What are you going to miss most after you go back home?”

“I think I’m going to miss the people here but especially my Sargent. I really love my Sargent, he’s actually a great guy!”

Why did you choose to run for Governor?

“I knew I had what it takes. I had the speaking charisma to know how to do it. Even though I didn’t win, I’m really glad I was able to stand up. I got a lot of attention, a lot of people like me, and pretty much everyone knows me, so I’m really glad I was able to run for governor and even though I didn’t get it, I think the sentiment is all the same!”

Where did the nickname Pants come from?

“So the story is that the first day I actually came to boys state, I was like 20 minutes late for the first drill that we had, so I walked outside and my Sargent turns, and he goes, ‘Where were you!’ and I just not thinking, I’m running and I scream I was putting on my pants sir! All while I was still pulling them up. Ever since everyone has just called me pants. I’ve decided to just adopt it.

Pants ran under the motto; “I wear the Pants so you don’t have to.”

Thank you Pants!
